Jean Carolyn Steuhm

TAMA-Jean Carolyn Steuhm, 72, of Tama passed away Friday, June 15, 2012 at Sunny Hill Care Center in Tama under the care of Iowa River Hospice. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 20, 2012 at 10:30 AM at St. John Lutheran Church in rural Tama with Pastor Kalen Barkholtz officiating. Interment will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in rural Tama. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 19 from 6 – 8 PM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama. Jean was born on October 11, 1939, in Tama, Iowa, the daughter of Walter and Mildred (Hagge) Backen. She graduated from Tama High School. On August 4, 1957, she was united in marriage to Ronald “Butch” Steuhm at St. John Lutheran Church in rural Tama. Jean formerly worked for Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Co. for twelve years, retiring in October of 2004. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, where she was active in WELCA. She enjoyed reading, gardening, being outside, watching the Hawkeyes and Cyclones in all sports, going to her grandchildren’s activities and spending time with her friends. Preceding her in death were her parents, a brother-in-law, Amos Corum; and a sister-in-law, Faith Backen. Survivors include her husband of fifty-four years, Ronald “Butch Steuhm of Tama; her children, Kevin (Sue) Steuhm of Idaho Falls, Idaho, Kurt (Dawn) Steuhm of Tama, Ronald “Boo” (Nikki) Steuhm of Tama, and Renee (Randy) Burnes of Tama; eight grandchildren, Brooke, Katie, Libbie, Abbie, Brodie, Kolbie, Chloee, and Joe; one great-grandson, Kyler; one brother, Richard “Butch” Backen of Tama; two sisters-in-law, Carleen Corum of Tama and Karen Jo (Gary) Myers of Marshalltown; one brother-in-law, Robert “Bob” (Cherry) Steuhm of Tama; many nieces, nephews, and cousins; and a close friend, J.J. Jacoby. A memorial fund has been established.
